DEATH OF BIRDS AND MARINE SPECIES IN THE PERUVIAN SEA

(2012)

For: Samuel Aquino F.

1. DEFINITION.

2. BACKGROUND.

3. LOCATION.

Beaches of Northern Peru

3.1.Región Lambayeque:

3.2. Piura Region:

Punta Aguja (neighborly with Lambayaque)

3.3. Region Lima (Lima Beaches):

3.1.1. Emerald Colan

4. DEAD SPECIES.

4.1. DOLPHINS:

Amount: 3 000 dolphins, the government says are 877.

Diagnosis of death:

According to the Scientific Organization for Conservation of Aquatic Animals (ORCA) mass mortality is due to the “marine Burburja” sound bag is formed using deep sea equipment for oil, gas and other minerals. The medical and forensic pathology tests carried out revealed that these dolphins padecíande acute decompression syndrome evidenced by peróticos bone fractures and bleeding in the middle ear, disseminated pulmonary emphysema, and air bubbles in organs like the liver, kidney and blood vessels.

Loa dolphins did not show any external lessiones, so it is concluded that the noise impact would be the primary cause of stranding. For the veterinarian and director of ORCA, Carlos Yaipen-Llanos, the effects of these “bubbles” are not visible to the naked eye or immediately, but generate after effects in animals impacted.

4.2. SEA LIONS.

Five copies.

4.3. WHALES:

4.4. PELICANS:

5000 muetos pelicans on beaches in the north.
10 pelicans appeared on beaches of Lima.

4.5. PIQUERAS BIRDS.

4.6. TORUGA MARINA: dead on beach 70 kilometers north of the creek of San Jose in Lambayaque.

5. REASONS FOR DEATH.

5.1. Petroleum activities:

5.1.1. Shares of damage: Use acoustic wave resulting in the death of cetaceans or use of “Bubble Marina”, an acoustic bag is formed using deep sea equipment for oil, gas and other minerals. According to a report of the Scientific Organization for Conservation of Aquatic Animals (ORCA).

5.2. Mining Activities: chemical-waste pollutants that are discharged into the sea by mining activities.

5.3. Activities populations: poor control of solid waste are discharged into the sea by sewage pollution of the sea.

5.4. Presence of a virus (according to government officials).

6. AGENTS INVOLVED.

The central government ruled that the cause of the deaths were the sports activities aimed at human and who died of natural causes.

6.1. Ministry of Health (MOH) justified the dead by an alleged presence of a deadly virus that would attack the marine species and prohibited to bathers into the sea as it would be at risk of becoming infected with this virus.

6.2. Ministry of Environment:

6.2.1. Vice-ministers Gabriel Quijandria were promptly announced to the analysis of internal organs, there are no signs of symptoms that are common in dolphins when they are affected by this type of wave. Furthermore, dies shortly theory valid for these animals appear dead so they started these laboraes marina (carried out by the company BP’Z), and after its conclusion.

6.3. Ministry of Production.

Instituto del Mar del Peru (IMARPE) reported that as of April 29 there were 592 dead seabirds, including pelicans and boobies, as well as about 900 dolphins, sea lions cicnco copies and a dead sea turtle on 70 miles of beach , north of the creek of San Jose in Lambayaque.

He also stated that there was no conclusive evidence of links between the mass death of dolphins along hacico seismic exploration and offshore oil in northern Peru.

But if you opened the possibility that the abnormal warming of sea surface of the Pacific Ocean and high levels of algae may have played a role, saying that would be needed to determine if further analysis without toxic plankton species and red shawl Tues

Minister of Production said: “The report concludes that the dolphins are killed by natural causes and not due to any human activity, is what you might say as a great ending”

6.4. Ministry of Agriculture: What accounted for the deaths of birds in the absence of anchovy which are not in the sea by warming of the sea.

6.5. BPZ Company

6.6. Social Organizations.

Scientific Organization for the Conservation of Aquatic Animals (ORCA). Director: Carlos Medical Veterianario Yaipen-Llanos. Opinion of the Director: “This fact killed 3 thousand dolphins and other cetaceans. In addition, not all animals found in the physical space or scope of a” bubble marina “are affected. Only those whose frequency of communication / hearing is in the range “sound” will be impacted directly and thereby inflict loss of balance, disorientation, internal bleeding, destruction of the inner ear, jaw destruction, rspiratoria decompression, air bubbles in organs and circulatory system, stroke , and eventually death, “describes the expert.

6.4. POPULATION.

6.4.1. Lima: May 14, hundreds of people took to the streets to demonstrate against marine spices dead on beaches of the coast and the Peruvian government to exert tighter control on ecosystem conservation and marine biodiversity.

This event was convened by the virtual network Facebbook. The protesters gathered outside the Ministry of Production to be received by officials.

Consisna: “Our ocean is sick, you have to cure him.” also people including children who waved signs with slogans like “Do not throw garbage into the sea” and “Save our Sea”

Participants: Groups of surfers (where he was Sofia Mulanovich: Former World Champion), Rafael Otero also surfer who was one of the organizers
Rafael Otero lamented the over-exploitation of fishing grounds in Peru where “the law is unable to prevent the destabilization of the marine ecosystem because the fishing industry is informal and is out of control ending with hake, anchovy and squid.” “The mortality of dolphins has been a major catastrophe and the government still does not determine its cause, but the control of the oil industry is a little out of control because they have come to deliver 260 decibels at sea, when the maximum time is 160 º he said ”

7. CONSEQUENCES.

7.1. Economics:

Reduction of fishing.
reducing the consumption of marine species.
Lowering the price of marine species.

8. ANNEXES.
